Media Literacy in the 21st Century

The wide availability of new media technology has given people the opportunity to make and show their own digital content, through the internet, digital cameras and even mobile phones. Media literacy is now considered an essential life skill for full participation in contemporary society.

Media literacy is about

  • recognising the social benefits of creativity for its own sake
  • understanding the media world all around us
  • resourcing individuals to be more engaged, creative and fulfilled

It should include people from all walks of life  to contribute and exploit all the possibilities of digital filmmaking and distribution.

However it is not just about giving people a set of technical skills. Part of the process in media literacy is exploring how images and sound convey meaning and how aethestic choices change the final result.
